The Walmart Effect sure didn't predict this kind of shit. At least not directly. I find comments about the issue to be interesting in themselves. Racial dynamics are brought up here in the USA Today section. ("These were not rednecks. They were a black mob. You were right in asking, 'Can we ever teach these people how to purchase goods responsibly?' The answer is probably not. Either they steal or buy on things on credit and default on the purchases they make.") It takes a bit of a political turn. Anti-WalMart group Hel-Mart jumped all over this news. So is this editorial. These comments take up a more anti-consumerist/anti-avarice bent. The police are now using camera footage from the store to try an track down members of the trampling mob. I'm doubly disgusted by comments by members of STOP THE ACLU and their blatant race baiting here. Video is included. Current Mood: cynical
